DermaPen (Collagen Induction)

This treatment is performed by means of using a device consisting of various amounts of needles to cause micro injuries in the skin which encourage the body’s innate ability to REGROW and REPAIR the skin through the physiology of COLLAGEN INDUCTION!

The area is flushed with blood rich in Growth Factors, Healing Messengers and Enzymes (MMP’S) to prepare the skin for healing.

These ENZYMES have the ability to breakdown irrationally positioned Collagen and Debri which impairs fibroblast activity!

The removal of this Debri together with the growth factor stimulation will encourage the Fibroblasts to manufacture Extra Cellular Matrix (Collagen, Elastin, Gags) and off course increase the production of new Fibroblasts.

Collagen Induction: DermaPen and Fraxel laser. The advantage DermaPen has over the latter methods is that the epidermis is not destroyed during the procedure (DermaPen) and is MUCH cheaper and less painful.

Which conditions does DermaPen treat?

  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet
  • UV damaged skin
  • Overall skin Rejuvenation
  • Large Pores
  • Scarring as a result of Acne, Surgery or Burns
  • Stretch Marks
  • Smoker’s lines around the lips

Treatment Frequency?

Most people will need a series of 6 treatments depending on what is being treated and the desired outcome.  The treatments are spaced at 4-6 week intervals depending on the intensity of the treatment performed.

  • Acne and Surgical Scars

The DermaPen treatment improves the appearance of acne and surgical scars.  The micro needles of the DermaPen cause new collagen and elastin to be generated and deposited in the areas of the scar.  The physical nature of skin needling breaks up this fibrous and uneven scar tissue and stimulates the growth of new tissue.  Plus, there is the added benefit of new capillary growth, which improves the blood supply to the area providing a healthy foundation for the new skin.

  • Fine Lines, Wrinkles, Scarring

As we age, the natural production of collagen and elastin diminishes, which leads to wrinkles and sagging.  Wrinkling in the skin is also caused by habitual facial expressions, ageing, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration and various other factors.  The DermaPen promotes a process of new skin growth through the science of collagen induction therapy.

  • Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-colour hue.  They are caused by tearing of the epidermis and over time can diminish but will not disappear completely.  DermaPen stimulates healthy collagen and elastin production in the deeper skin layer to repair the damaged areas with the release of growth factors and stimulation of fibroblasts.  Everyone will experience improvement in the appearance of marks. Early red stretch marks will show the most improvement.

  • How can a Burn & Surgical Scar be treated?

The challenge of a burn scar lies within the matrix of all the forms or categories of the scars involving hypertrophic and keloid scars and pigmentation flaws.  These scars thicken over time.  Burn scar therapy has been historically limited.  The DermaPen’s unique vertical stamping and depth control up to 2.5mm makes treating burn scars superior to the other methods of needling. With surgical steel integrity, the robust nature of the automated needle tip penetrate difficult burn scar tissue dramatically improving appearance, texture, elasticity, size and mobility.

Questions & Answers

  • Does it hurt?

An anaesthetic cream is applied before so minimal if any discomfort is felt.

  • What does one look life immediately after treatment?

Day 1: Erythema will depend upon how aggressive the treatment was performed.

Day 2: A red or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Swelling may be more noticeable on the second day if any.

Day 3: Skin can be pink or normal in colour.  Skin Flaking is possible.

  • Can I wear make up after my DermaPen treatment?

You can apply makeup, 4 hours after your procedure.

  • How deep does the DermaPen go?

From very superficial penetration to deep dermal penetration, the professional applications have a wide range of potential to improve and correct skin problems without the use of lasers.  Penetration ranges begin at cosmetic depth of 0.25 mm to clinical treatment depths up to 2.5mm.

  • Is the depth of the DermaPen the same for all skin problems?

Light penetration opens the skin long enough for the introduction of specific treatment serums.  Since most product molecules are too large to cross the skin barrier, they can only be minimally effective.  The DermaPen opens the skin for a few minutes and this allows a huge increase of product penetration – your product ingredients can then reach beneath the surface where they will do the most good.  Treatment serums can be selected for the skin lightening, hydration, texture and pore tightening.

Mid penetration depths can have a very positive impact on superficial sun damage and light scarring to improve skin texture and tone and a visible improvement in pore size appearance.

Deeper levels of penetration can improve acne scars, burn scars, stretch marks and tighten skin and soften wrinkles.

  • Do we still need to avoid sun exposure after the procedure?

DermaPen reduces the risk of post treatment pigmentation that is more prevalent with laser heat for ethnic skin (Patienst will still need to use sun protection and avoid heat exposure while in the recovery phase).

  • How long does the new collagen last?

The process of DermaPen skin remodelling can go on for months after each DermaPen treatment and the results are accumulative.  Initial results can be seen within 10 days. The best results of one single treatment can be seen up to 3 months later and the collagen is continually growing and maturing in the skin over a 90 day period.

  • When should one start DermaPen treatments?

The sooner the better. If wrinkles are left and they become ingrained and scar like they are much more difficult to treat. It is also a great idea to start treatments to prevent sagging that takes place with ageing around the brow, around the mouth, neck and jawline.

  • Can DermaPen be combined with other procedures?

Most definitely.

  • Bev’s Tip:

Combine every second DermaPen treatment with a Retistore peel.
